Driving Tips for Northern Ireland

The law in Northern Ireland states that all passengers including children must be buckled into their seats while a vehicle is in motion. The use of car seats for under twelves is a must. A new law in the country for children's seat belts came into force in April 2015.

In NI drivers can purchase either diesel fuel or unleaded petrol from any of the local garages and filling stations around the country. The black pump is for the use of diesel and the green pump is for the use of unleaded petrol. The prices vary depending on the oil prices at the time and usually large supermarkets adjust their prices in competition with each other. The costs are normally around the same as the rest of the UK with the prices in Republic of Ireland being more expensive and in Euros.
Guide prices in September 2015 would see diesel costs at around £1.07 per litre compared to petrol prices at around £1.10 per litre.
In line with other countries the use of car parks including multi-storey parking is charged per use and is the liability of the driver to ensure that all parking is paid for before they return their rental vehicle. Signs by the side of the road will also indicate when parking is allowed. Double yellow lines mean that no parking is permitted.
