Wheelchair Victory

birmingham

A man who is wheelchair bound has won a famous victory in the Supreme Court.

He brought his case to court because he was refused access to a public bus due to a mother and child with a pram already taking up the disabled space on the bus.

Their refusal to move from the allocated disabled space meant he could not board the bus.

Previously bus drivers asked parents/guardians with pushchairs to give up their space on the bus for a disabled person in a wheelchair. The reason for this request is that there is a limited amount of space on a bus to accommodate both prams and
wheelchairs.

The new ruling allows bus drivers to be assertive if the non wheelchair passenger refuses to give up their space without the need to remove the passenger altogether from the bus.
