Heathrow Third Runway – Fail to meet Climate Change Target?
The Green Party has produce a report indicating the the United Kingdom will fail to meet it’s climate change targets if Gatwick or Heathrow airport get a new runway.
The new study indicates that the UK will not be able to contribute
to reducing carbon emissions if plans to build new runways at Gatwick or Heathrow go ahead.
Green Party leader, Natalie Bennett, stated that the UK should reduce air traveller numbers, not increase them.
Bennett challenged David Cameron and the London Mayor candidates to show how you build an additional runway and at the same time meet emission targets.
The groups Greenpeace and Campaign for Better Transport have suggested a radical solution of introducing a frequent flyer tax to ensure compliance with the Climate Change Act.
The Green Party candidates have suggested that a solution could be to move short haul flight passengers on to trains.
