The study suggests that anyone who suffers from arthritis or is elderly or blind or sight problems is struggling to cross the road safely in the time allocated by the crossing.
Prof Steultjens study showed that as much as 85% of over 65’s were unable to cross the road in the time allocated to the green man. He is calling for the crossings to increase their time once the button has been pressed to allow
the elderly and infirm the time to safely cross over to the other side of the road.
The five year study is taking into account various patients from around England as well as Scotland in an effort to raise safety fears of the elderly when crossing roads.
